From Photo to Proof: Reimagining the Review Image Experience

Objective

Redesign the review image modal across mobile, tablet, and desktop experiences to create a more informative and engaging review ecosystem. The new experience aimed to surface critical review information directly alongside customer-uploaded images, including ratings, review content, recommendation status, and submission details, enabling users to make more confident purchasing decisions.

From Photo to Proof: Reimagining the Review Image Experience

The problem

AutoZone's existing review image experience was constrained by both usability and platform limitations. Images were displayed in isolation within a basic modal, requiring customers to add a separate caption despite already providing detailed review content. Because reviews were managed through a third-party solution, the experience lacked flexibility and failed to provide meaningful context between customer photos and their corresponding feedback. As a result, users were unable to fully understand the story behind the images they were viewing.

Discovery & Research

To inform the redesign, I conducted a competitive analysis of leading retail review experiences, evaluating both image galleries and review-detail modals. I identified patterns that aligned with user expectations, uncovered interaction gaps, and documented standout features that enhanced engagement and credibility.

Insights from this analysis were synthesized into a strategic framework of opportunities, exploring both functional improvements and new experience concepts that could strengthen the connection between visual and written customer feedback.

Outcome

The redesigned experience transformed customer images from standalone assets into contextualized review content. By pairing photos with the complete review narrative, users gained a clearer understanding of product quality, fit, and real-world usage.

The final solution delivered a cohesive, scalable, and responsive experience that improved review discoverability, increased information clarity, and elevated the overall customer decision-making journey.
